Mongolia Walking Tour 2019 - Khoton Lake - Day 2

Tavan Bogd National Park - Mongolia - Wildflowers - Edelweiss

The spectacular Altai mountains are visible to the west and beautiful Khoton Lake to the east as we start to make our way along its contours. The area around the lake is populated with some dense clusters of larch trees (Larix sibirica) as well as hundreds of tiny wildflowers including the classic Edelweiss (Leontopodium nivale).

On the second day we cover abut 18 kilometres of very gradually sloping terrain that undulates over some grassy and boggy fields and many rivulets and streams.

There are many fresh water streams to cross along the way, sometimes we change shoes, sometimes we use stepping stones, sometimes we need help from the beautiful Mongolian steeds.

The terrain throughout the Tavan Bogd National Park varies a lot. On day 2 we experience the green, grassy and lush alpine environment around Khoton Lake and foot of the mountains.

We also move deeper into the Tavan Bogd National Park and witness, sometimes from a distance, sometimes close up, local Mongolian nomads at their daily activities. It is our last night camping right on the lake and its tranquil energy.
